The primary purpose of Terminav© is to look up specialized terms in either official language. With Terminav©, users can view entries but cannot add or modify them.
Before you begin, you must select a source language (the language of the term you are searching). To do this, click on the arrow on the drop-down menu and select the appropriate language. For example, to find the term "contrôleur de la circulation aérienne", select "French Term" in the drop-down menu; for the term "airspace", select "English Term".
Type your search term in the search field, then click OK or press Enter. Terminav© interprets terms as character strings and arranges them in alphabetical order. If your search term is in the database, Terminav© will display it, highlighted, at the top of a term list on the left side of the screen. The corresponding bilingual terminology record will appear on the right.
If your search term is not in the database, Terminav© will display a three-column table of partial matches on the right side of the screen. For each item in the table, the word(s) that match your query will appear in a specific colour. To view the full record for an item, click on its number on the left side of the table. To go back to the table, click on your browser's Back button.
To print the record on your screen, just click on the link Print this record located at the top of each record.
Each term belongs to a specific domain and is sometimes also classified into a sub-domain. This field gives the user an idea of the meaning or context in which the term is used, especially when the record does not contain a definition, context or comment.
The Source field contains the title of the documents from which the terms have been extracted or which were used to verify the accuracy of the terms in the database. Some of the terms have been created by NAV CANADA's Translation and Terminology Services. "NAV CANADA's Translation Services" will appear in the Source field of these records. Note that records predating 1996 that indicate "NAV CANADA's Translation Services" as the source were created while air navigation services were still being provided by Transport Canada.
This field shows the date on which the record was created.
These fields display the key terms of the record. The English terms in the "English" fields of a record are synonymous, as are the French terms in the "Français" fields. Acronyms for some of the terms are also provided in these fields.
All terms are labelled either "Correct / Correct" or "Standardized / Normalisé". Standardized terms have been adopted by terminology committees made up of experts in the aviation field, or obtained from official sources or standardization organizations. Correct terms have been created and are used by NAV CANADA's Translation and Terminology Services, and were approved by specialists within the organization.
A term may be labelled "Plural / Pluriel" if this information is relevant. French terms are classified in either the masculine or feminine gender. Some French terms can either be masculine or feminine, e.g., occupational titles.
A term may be accompanied by a definition in its corresponding language. The definition is usually taken from a document listed in the Source field.
A term may be accompanied by one or more sentences in which the term is used to illustrate the meaning of the term.
Additional information may be provided on the nature of a given term, how it is used, who it is used by, etc.
